Beyond Documentation: What Makes a Portfolio Meaningful?

A learner has submitted every required portfolio activity on time. The reflections are there. The goals are there. The advisor's comments are there. On paper, everything looks exactly as it should. But look a little closer.

The reflections are brief and largely summarize what happened rather than what was learned. The learner has written essentially the same goals for three consecutive review periods. Across multiple advisor reviews, the feedback keeps circling back to the same observation: limited follow-through.

Nothing here would trigger a formal review, and nothing is technically wrong. That's exactly what makes it worth paying attention to.

We opened a webinar with a version of this scenario because it illustrates a challenge that extends beyond any single portfolio platform or educational program. A portfolio built primarily to track completed activities can appear perfectly healthy while missing the very thing it was intended to support: learner development.

Although researchers describe portfolios in different ways and emphasize different implementation strategies, they repeatedly return to the same underlying idea. The educational value of a portfolio has surprisingly little to do with the portfolio itself. Instead, it comes from the reflection, coaching, feedback, and longitudinal conversations that the portfolio makes possible. This distinction is subtle, but we think it fundamentally changes how portfolios should be designed.

The 2026 International Association of Medical Science Educators Conference brought together medical science and health professions educators in Augusta, Georgia, to explore how institutions can adapt, innovate, and grow in a rapidly changing educational environment.

Reflecting the conference theme, “Flourishing Through Change,” the program focused on more than simply responding to disruption. Across plenaries, workshops, focus sessions, roundtables, and presentations, the conversation centered on how educators can build stronger, more intentional systems for curriculum design, assessment, learner support, faculty development, and educational innovation.

Several themes emerged throughout the conference, including the expanding role of AI in health professions education, the need for more integrated and competency-aligned curricula, the importance of meaningful assessment, and the continued focus on supporting both learner and educator flourishing.

Recap of GIR 2026: Blazing a Trail for Technology in Academic Medicine

Held in Austin, Texas, this year’s conference theme, “Blazing a Trail for Solutions,” reflected the practical tone of the meeting. Across plenaries, breakout sessions, hot topic discussions, and posters, the focus was not simply on what new technologies can do, but on what institutions need in order to use them well.

Several themes emerged throughout the conference, including the growing role of AI in education and research, the importance of data governance, the operational realities of digital transformation, and the need to align technology decisions with learner support, institutional strategy, and long-term sustainability.

As expectations around fairness, transparency, and consistency continue to evolve across medical education, many institutions are taking a closer look at how learner narratives are developed and supported behind the scenes.

In our webinar, From Assessments to Defensible Medical Student Performance Narratives, we explored the broader institutional processes that contribute to stronger, more defensible learner narratives — from assessment practices and governance to workflow visibility and longitudinal learner review.

Recap of AACOM 2026: Building Smarter Systems in Osteopathic Education

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) Educating Leaders 2026 brought together a wide range of conversations about the future of osteopathic medical education. Across sessions on topics such as artificial intelligence, curriculum design, assessment, advising, GME growth, learner well-being, faculty development, and osteopathic identity, it was clear that medical education leaders are not simply looking for new ideas. They are looking for practical, sustainable ways to make increasingly complex systems work better for learners, educators, and the communities they serve.

That is an important distinction because innovation in medical education is not only about adopting new technologies or adding new curricular content—it is about connecting the right people, processes, data, and support structures so institutions can act with greater clarity and consistency.

At this year’s conference, five specific themes stood out and pointed in these directions:

AI is becoming part of the practical infrastructure of medical education, supporting areas such as curriculum management, assessment, feedback analysis, admissions, advising, simulation, and faculty development.

Educational data is only valuable when it leads to action, especially in curriculum improvement, learner support, assessment alignment, accreditation readiness, and continuous quality improvement.

Residency readiness is increasingly a shared institutional responsibility, connecting advising, assessment, clinical education, professionalism, learner performance, and UME-GME alignment.

Workforce development depends on stronger community alignment, including rural and underserved GME growth, pathway programs, clinical partnerships, and training models designed around local healthcare needs.

Better systems must still support human relationships, including learner well-being, faculty development, coaching, professional identity formation, and the whole-person values central to osteopathic education.

We recently hosted a webinar centered on a question many health professions programs eventually face: why doesn’t feedback consistently lead to meaningful improvement?

What made the discussion especially valuable was that it did not focus on conducting more assessment or collecting more data. Most programs are already doing both. Instead, the conversation focused on how the design of assessment and feedback processes shapes what gets observed, what gets communicated, and how learners interpret and use that information.

Recap of AACN Deans 2026: AI, Outcomes, and Strategic Leadership

Every conference has a theme, but some themes feel more like a backdrop than a real signifier of the important conversations being had. That was not the case at this year’s AACN Deans Annual Meeting.

From the official framing to the sessions that drew the most energy, this year’s event centered on a single challenge: how nursing leaders can lead strategically in an environment that keeps pulling them back into reactive work. The conference theme focused on advancing deans’ strategic leadership, and the official learning outcomes reinforced the same priorities:

AI in academic nursing

Interprofessional team training and quality

Budget stewardship

Academic-practice partnerships

Helping experienced leaders operate less reactively and more strategically

What made the conversation especially compelling was how connected those issues now feel. AI, accreditation, clinical readiness, financial stewardship, and workforce planning are no longer separate conversations. They are increasingly part of the same leadership challenge.

Recap of ADEA 2026: A More Connected Future for Dental Education

The ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition is always a valuable opportunity to step back and look at where dental education is headed. This year’s meeting in Montréal, centered on the theme "Bridging Pathways, Advancing Access", felt especially focused on how schools move from strategy to implementation.

Across sessions on competency frameworks, curriculum reform, technology, and learner support, one message that came through clearly was that dental education is becoming more connected. Institutions are being asked to better align curriculum, assessment, clinical training, and program strategy in ways that are more integrated, more flexible, and more responsive to change.

For Elentra, this was both energizing and validating. The conversations at ADEA closely reflected the priorities we hear from dental schools every day, especially around competency-based education (CBE) and curriculum management.

From DaVinci to Elentra: How Institutions Are Strengthening Workflows

Platform transitions in medical education aren’t simply IT consolidation projects—they’re operational and cultural shifts that affect everything from assessment strategy and clerkship administration to faculty workload management and the learner experience.

Over the past year, we’ve seen a clear trend: programs using DaVinci Leo or platforms from other vendors are moving to Elentra and using the transition as an opportunity to modernize workflows and more fully operationalize competency-based education (CBE). At the same time, newer programs adopting Elentra from the ground up are seeking to build scalable clinical and curricular infrastructure from day one.

Change Across Our Community: Integrating Medical Education at Scale

When Fragmented Tools Start to Limit Scale

Health professions programs often rely on multiple systems to manage scheduling, curriculum, and other core academic processes. As institutions expand to include multiple schools, campuses, and clinical sites, these disconnected tools can create complexity, spread data across platforms, increase reliance on manual workarounds, and require teams to manage multiple vendor relationships.

Over time, this fragmentation can limit visibility, consistency, and the ability to scale effectively—especially when programs are trying to reduce the hidden costs of fragmented systems through technology consolidation rather than continuing to stitch together workarounds across tools that weren’t designed for health professions education.
